Maximum Family Benefit

Student Question:

Does the maximum family benefit apply to a husband and wife that are both fully insured if the combined total between the two exceeds the maximum family limit?

If I understand correctly, the maximum family limit only applies if there are beneficiaries within the family receiving benefits from another insured individual.

Good question on a confusing topic.  The short answer is no.  A family benefit limit generally applies to benefits paid on only one covered worker’s record.  If the spouses are each receiving benefits under their own, individual record, then their benefits would not count against the other spouse’s family benefit limit.

You are correct assuming that the benefits are being paid from one covered worker’s record. Well done!
